Budget still fresh, legislators give update

The session, which ended with the approval of a budget bill at about 5:30 a.m. a week ago, was a “very grueling” one, according to Sen. Tom Holland, a Democrat representing the Third District, that included numerous pieces of legislation on different subjects and a tough budgeting process that included further cuts to base state aid per pupil for education. Another “casualty,” as Vickery called it, of the budget process was the Kansas Arts Commission. Carnegie Arts Center Executive Director Carolyn Singleton asked Morris about Gov. Sam Brownback’s plan to replace the commission with a private, non-profit foundation. Morris said the Senate rejected the reorganization order affecting the commission and included funding for the commission in its budget. Brownback, he said, has laid off all five employees of the commission and threatened to veto the funding proposal. But Morris told Singleton that there is no funding built into the budget for the foundation if the Legislature’s proposal is vetoed. Vickery said the House and Senate also worked hard on the state’s tax policy. Holland, asked if tax breaks for large businesses would continue even as cuts continue for education and services, said he remained concerned with that tax policy, especially a bill that he said seemed to draw down the state’s income tax revenues. That particular proposal, Holland said, could shift the burden onto local governments. And though some of those debates will continue in the next session, several legislators also cited bright spots. Kultala mentioned a bill she worked on that will allow Fort Leavenworth to capture transportation waiting funds to use to bus its students to Leavenworth High School. Rep. Connie O’Brien, a Republican from the 42nd District, said she was happy with the House’s passage of “pay-go” legislation that required lawmakers to find an equal cut to support any new spending, a voter ID bill and the beginnings of an overhaul to the Kansas Public Employee Retirement System.

Grade Definitions at Pomona : EphBlog

In response to longstanding concerns about grade inflation at Pomona College, a faculty and student committee is developing a set of grade definitions to guide grading across the college.

The Curriculum Committee began reviewing grading practices last semester, after faculty voted in favor of a process to produce college-wide grade definitions. Pomona currently has no official grade definitions to designate what level of student performance corresponds to each letter grade.

The committee plans to submit a proposed set of definitions to a faculty vote in Spring 2011.

“Our goal is to define, as best we can, how the college wants to grade,” said Academic Affairs Commissioner John Thomason PO ’12, who represents the ASPC on the Curriculum Committee. “We want to reflect the wishes of the people that are doing the grading—the faculty—while taking all viewpoints into account.”

To take up our other threads, it’s not going to happen without broad public and likely legislative pressure.

The bottom line is that to be a mathematician, you have to have the brains to be a mathematician. The humanities aren’t necessarily ‘soft’ — but there’s plenty of room for faking it.

If you can’t keep up with Keynes and Hayek on an intellectual level, well, there’s always the possibility of carving away some little insignificant topic, such as (real example) trinket stores beside interstate highways and territorially defending it.

Then, as “Crazy U” puts it, you get university admins who have no reason not to kow-tow to students lack of standards on the one hand, and to professors’ whims on the other hand.

Who wants to teach the core when you can spend each semester exploring your little pet topic of interest, no matter how utterly trivial and insignificant?

And what’s the lynchpin of this– the absurdity of tenure, which protects the dead wood and prevents universities from hiring young, bright, motivated professors even though the market is flooded with them. says:

@Ken:

Most mathematicians can’t keep up with Wiles or Grothedieck or Tao on an intellectual level. We also carve away little insignificant topics, though we don’t usually have to territorially defend it, because all the other mathematicians realize they’re also better off carving away their own topics.
