X Factor USA: Cheryl Cole has lost her dress factor

Cheryl Cole's choice of outfit to promote the American version of The X Factor, as pictured in yesterday’s Mail, looks simple. But it is as loaded with meaning as ancient hieroglyphics.

First, she is wearing an orange mini dress from the pre-fall collection by Giambattista Valli and Giuseppe Zanotti sandals.

This tells us two things: that Cheryl Cole is not a mere mortal, forced to wear spring/summer clothes that are in the shops now (so common!), but that she is able to order a sample, hot off the catwalk, that won’t reach stores for another month.

Second, her choice of footwear reveals she puts being fashionable before being beautiful: note how fellow judge Paula Abdul is wearing classic courts to elongate her legs, while Cheryl is in less flattering platform T-bars.

She has also cleverly chosen a Vivienne Westwood choker, with its tiny crown, from the autumn/winter 2012 collection. This item is so new that it doesn’t even have a price. Worn just a few inches higher it could almost be a tiara! 

But most glaring of all is the fact that Cheryl has quickly upped the number of hours she spends grooming. Even the Household Cavalry — who famously begin primping and preening before dawn — cannot hold a hairbrush to American female TV stars.

A source in the production team was quoted at the weekend as saying: ‘Obviously, Cheryl is a gorgeous woman, but she turned up to the first day’s filming of The X Factor looking a bit weird in purple flares. Everyone was talking about how she looked, but for all the wrong reasons.

‘The level of glamour expected by American audiences is much higher. Here, women in TV are groomed to within an inch of their lives.’

Fellow judge Simon Cowell is rumoured to have ordered a team of LA fashionistas, spearheaded by the celebrities’ favourite stylist Rachel Zoe (I bet she can’t wait to get her talons on Cole, who has the brown, Twiglet limbs Zoe finds so inspiring) to help the 27-year-old put together a wardrobe for the live shows in September.

Americans are easily frightened by fashion (they invented sportswear, remember, and it was Calvin Klein who came up with minimalism), and so Cheryl has been told to tone it down a little.

Even her body, seen as super-humanly thin back home, has been deemed not quite toned enough for American eyes.

Consequently, she has hired Tracy Anderson, the woman who gave Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow the physiques of Olympic pentathletes.
