Let Private Enterprise Solve Obesity Problem, Not Government

Who wants the government to tell our kids what they should eat?  Not me.  Regrettably, since The First Lady has no purpose other than pet causes, government is needlessly perpetuating its involvement in an area that lies outside its purview.

Michelle Obama’s cause?  Childhood obesity.  It’s a serious issue, to be sure.  So is obesity in general in this country.  Yet against all rules of logic, last year Congress passed the feel-good-sounding Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.  All this bill actually does is extend the federal Child Nutrition standards that have been around for decades – the same standards that may partially be a cause for childhood obesity (as the White House press release reminds us how many children’s meals are taken at school).

The solution, of course, does not lie with government, but with common sense and private enterprise.  One little start-up company that tackles obesity head-on. I want to call attention to their product, and it founders, because they represent the American Dream.  They offer a solution to a problem that government could never solve because its message is too bloated, too abstract, and too confusing to have any impact on the public.

The product is called Lifesize .  I asked to join their Board of Directors and was accepted because we share the same vision — that entrepreneurs can solve this country’s problems better than government can.  Rather than just make the claim, however, I put my time and money where my mouth was.

The government “solution” is to ramble on about food pyramids and dietary guidelines.

every American does – keep track of how many ounces of grains and meat/beans you eat daily, and how many cups of vegetables, fruits, and dairy to consume, while still being conscious about the number of calories all this adds up to.  Maybe you’d like to see the Healthy Eating Index ?  Maybe you’d actually like to know what the heck that is ?  You can spend weeks going through all the government websites specifically devoted to drowning you in mountains of useless information that won’t help you lose a single pound.

Contrary to government’s approach, and true to the promise of private enterprise, Lifesize’s founders created a product that’s simple to use and understand. Lifesize isn’t a diet . Can anybody tell me for sure if I will lose all my rollover minutes if I make the change online? I have 5 lines on a family plan and I know that I have to make the change on all 5 lines manually which I am ok with. Can somebody verify for me that nothing will change on my account such as losing rollover mins, losing corporate FAN discount, losing anything else? I simply want to change Unlimited family text to unlimited family text plus unlimited any M2M. Whenever I do an online chat with a rep or call, they always tell me I need to 'update' my plan or something (I am on a family talk 1400 plan). I don't see a reason for this but they always tell me when I 'update', i'll lose all my rollover mins so I have not 'updated'....obviously and no ill effects as of yet. I did the same thing you did. I went from a 1400 minute plan to a 700 minute plan. I had 11,383 rollover minutes. I spoke to the rep and asked her very politely if she can help me out. She said that I will only have 700 rollover minutes after dropping my plan down. I asked again, and this time I practically begged her for help. She said that reps are authorized to give up to 5,000 rollover minutes for a customer in good standing. For the record, the (wealthy) are paying their fair share. The top 50% of wage earners pay over 95% of the income tax. Your disgusting attack on all conservatives wanting to '****' over all citizens is just that... disgusting ... Lower taxes? In his Brief History of Neoliberalism, the eminent social geographer David Harvey outlined "a theory of political economic practices that proposes that human well-being can best be advanced by liberating individual entrepreneurial freedoms and skills within an institutional framework characterised by strong private property rights, free markets, and free trade." Neoliberal states guarantee, by force if necessary, the "proper functioning" of markets; where markets do not exist (for example, in the use of land, water, education, health care, social security, or environmental pollution), then the state should create them.
